Behind the Scenes: Feature with The Spruce
When The Spruce approached me to feature me as a “plant person” I was overjoyed. I was so excited that I wasn’t even nervous. I would run around the house announcing that I would one day be “plant famous”. For those of you who know me, you know this is more of a frolicking around the house.
Once I was standing in front of the incredibly large and fancy black camera, I realized that I had done nothing like this before. This camera is nothing like we used or even rented in art school, it had different sections for the videographer to look, I had a mic hooked up to me, there was professional lighting and a director. And the cinematographer wasn’t some student, this was Tyler Ribble a cinematographer that does film work for some of the most famous people in NYC, he works on shows and ads such as Comedy Central, Broad City, Bud Light, and Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Once this all hit me, of course I got nervous. Had I prepared for the interview? You bet I did. I mapped out all the questions, wrote out answers, and had multiple versions depending on how I felt. I was told I was the most prepared talent the show has had thus far. Even with all my prep work, I still managed to mentally freak out and mess up my first couple of lines.
I quickly had this sickening feeling….what do I do with my hands? While working at IBM we had training about how to stand for a presentation and how much to use our hands in gesticulation, but was this the same here? How does my hand waving look on camera? In the image below I was thrilled to use a plant as a prop! Finally something to do with my hands!
Almost like magic, the filming got easier. Teddy came into the shot, and most of my nerves went away and I started to feel like myself. I had the best time filming with this incredible team. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it!
